Every day, we’re getting older. That doesn’t mean we can’t feel young, though. What it means, however, is that we must account for our needs and do everything we can to age gracefully. Doing so allows us to live rich, full lives despite having a disease.

Here are five ways to slow down the aging process with diabetes:

Keep your glucose levels in check.

Managing your diabetes by regularly monitoring your blood sugars, taking prescribed medications or insulin, eating a healthy diet, and exercising is key. That way, you’re able to prevent further damage to your body. When your blood sugars are consistently high, they cause damage to your eyes, kidneys, and liver. They also affect your ability to perform day-to-day tasks easily.

Move your body regularly.

Find exercises that you love doing. It doesn’t feel like work if you’re having fun doing it. Change up your routine regularly to keep things fresh and exciting. There are many ways to increase the amount of physical activity you get in a day. Make it a point to walk as much as possible even if you don’t have time for any other form of exercise.

Increase the amount of happiness you experience.

Find the things that make you happy and feel alive. Do more of them! Make it a point to pencil in plenty of “me time” into your calendar. It’s important that you’re able to feel good inside and out. It helps you make better choices knowing that you’ve got many things to look forward to throughout the week.

Get a good night’s rest.

Make sure that sleep is a priority in your life. It’s how the body recovers after a long day. It’s also vital to good health and mental well-being. Try to get at least 8 hours of sleep each evening. Do your part to reduce stressful activities at night by coming up with a sleep schedule that serves you well. Take a warm bath, drink a soothing cup of hot tea, and read something inspiring before bed. Make sure that the temperature of the room is comfortable and that the light from outdoor street lamps and other homes doesn’t shine through your windows. If your neighborhood is particularly noisy at night, use a white noise machine to drown out the sounds.

Exercise caution.

From the foods and snacks you choose to eat to the way you drive your car or keep your home, there are things you can do to eliminate threats and keep yourself safe. Living a long healthy life is easy when you’re able to think ahead. Assess the situation, identify what could possibly go wrong, and do your part to reduce the risk.

Slow down the aging process by adopting healthy habits. You’ll feel happier than you did before and be able to manage your diabetes better. Best of all, you’ll be living life to the fullest, the way you did before you were diagnosed. Who knows, maybe you have diabetes to thank for helping you make the life changes you needed to make all along.
