A healthy lunch will take control of lunchtime

Eating a healthy lunch is easier that you may think. Many people do not realize that packing your own lunch everyday not only saves you money but also saves you time and calories! Even spending $10 a day on lunch, which may not seem much, adds up over time. Additionally, the meals served in restaurants can not only have large portions but also tend to come with some fattening sides like fries, cookies, or chips. By packing lunch yourself, you are able to control your portions and choose healthier ingredients.

What should be in the bag?

To keep your body fueled for the afternoon, your ideal lunch would contain 1/4 lean protein, 1/4 whole grain, 1/2 non-starchy vegetables, 1/4 serving dairy or dairy-alternative, and a small amount of fresh fruit. The combination of protein and fiber from whole grains, vegetables, and/or fruit is great at keeping you full longer.

Keep it interesting!

To jazz up your lunches, try a variety of whole-grain breads, wraps, pitas, sprouts, assorted greens, sliced cucumbers, onions, and tomatoes, among other foods! Sandwiches are not your only option either – you can easily pack dinner leftover dinners as lunches if you plan ahead when cooking. You can also batch cook your favorite foods on the weekends and freeze them into individual portions to use during the week! Thinking ahead while planning and eating dinner is quick, easy, and saves you lots of time for your future lunches.

Pack right

Remember to keep your lunch healthy and safe while at work by keeping it refrigerated once you get to work. If this is not possible, utilize an insulated thermos, plastic lunch bag, reusable plastic container, lunchbox, and/or ice pack to store your lunch at the proper temperature. Enjoy your lunch!
